EL MAC Goes Massive at the Montana Colors Factory in Barcelona, Spain.

As you know, EL MAC was in our factory in Barcelona, doing a mural. Here's the video of the process which the directors of Popcranc did, with the support of Offf Festival and Montana Colors.
In the words of the directors themselves: "From the very start, when we had the opportunity to speak with Mac and find out more about his work, we decided to center the video idea, not on the mural process, but on the style and inspiration of the author. The suggestive image of the girl which he painted really reminded us of Andy Warhol's screen tests, and the simple details characteristic of Jean-Luc Godard's Anna Karina. So we threw ourselves into the project, playing with that inspiration. The main thing was to use the dramatic combination of black and white, just as Mac did with his piece. We had a great time during the whole process with Mac, Ari, and Kim, and hope that they'll come back to Barcelona soon. Many thanks to Montana for the opportunity!"

“When I first worked here on the Face2Face Project, I pasted portraits of Israelis and Palestinians doing the same jobs to show that, despite their differences, Palestinians and Israelis are similar enough to understand each other” said JR. “And then I came back in 2010 to set up the first tours allowing people to discover both Israel and Palestine during the same trip”. “I return now simply as the printer, giving people the photobooths for free so they can take their own portraits, share what they stand for, and paste the streets of their communities. Everyone can tell a story through art, and the Time is Now to break down barriers to expression and give people the tools to be seen and heard.”

In the context of Israeli/Palestinian situation reaching a crossroad, of a reshaping of the Arab world and of Israeli society urging for social justice, Time Is Now to listen to the silent majority which believes that the solution leading to 2 states for 2 peoples is waiting for implementation, and will bring peace and shared prosperity. JR states: “We want to show that there is massive support for peace on both sides and that young people want to move forward, to secure their future. Forty years ago, an article in the July 21,1971 issue of the New York Times ignited the graffiti movement in New York. With its profile on the then 17-year-old Demetrius, a Manhattan teenager who was known locally by his ubiquitous “tag” of TAKI 183, graffiti had officially arrived.

On the 40th anniversary of this article, July 21, 2011, TAKI 183 will arrive – again – at The Hole gallery in New York City for a special event with Roger Gastman and Caleb Neelon, authors of a new book on the history of this colorful and influential art form – THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN GRAFFITI, to which TAKI 183 wrote the foreword.

“It’s pretty cool that there’s people out there that say I’m a legend,” writes TAKI 183 in the foreword of THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN GRAFFITI. “It’s especially funny when that word gets around to my kids. Isn’t that what we all hope for in some way, to have something we’re known for? I’ll take it, until I get the Nobel Prize or something,” he said.

Gastman and Neelon, who, over the span of four years, interviewed more than five hundred key artists for the making of this definitive book, are respected authorities in the graffiti culture. Gastman, who co-curated the first major U.S. museum exhibition on the history of graffiti and street art at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, where the Art in the Streets is still presently on display, was a consulting producer on Banksy’s Oscar-nominated Exit Through the Gift Shop. The first to publish a comprehensive and accessible book that details the full history—from the 1800s to the present day—of American graffiti, the authors have insight into the world that TAKI 183 helped to create.

I’ve spent a few days thinking about the project, and about the way we are approaching it. The idea of generating a third language seems like it’s not working very well, at least not in a practical way. Certainly it is a path that should become stronger during the journey, but so far it has seemed to be more of an impediment than the correct path. We already knew that teamwork is very complex, but I think it is a lot harder when the roles on the team are not well established. Because then the fight between the two egos grow to see who is the one directing the movie (I´m thinking out loud) and its something that gets more complex when the two directors (you and I) have such different ways of working.

From San:
I completely understand what you say. I think we have to be practical, although we both like to navigate riskier terrain than we normally would on our own. Team work is hard, and even more so when obsessive perfectionists like us work together, each with our own story, but it is what it is. When I made the two drawings that I sent you, I always thought that what I was doing was twisting my work a little bit to get closer to a new “skin”, not so much trying to invent a third language. I think that´s exactly where the focus of the expo should be, in making an effort to get out of our safe zone and dig into something a little less personal, but using our powers, of course…

Nicolas' spontaneous larger-than-life art projection installations of Giant Super Robots in New York City made front page news in the Philippine Daily Inquirer (the nation's largest newspaper) on March 31, 2011; garnering him the admiration of an entire nation of new fans and followers. "Vivid images of anime and manga characters like Getter Robo G and UFO Grendizer, light the cityscape in spirit of Japan", writes Joan Erakit of Frank151.

"Six Tunisian photographers travelled the country to take pictures of 100 « normal » tunisians representing the Tunisian diversity: men and women, young and old, from North, South East and West, rich or poor, civil servants, business people, workers, farmers, unemployed, and much more… For a country which has only exposed in the streets the portraits of the ruler, this makes quite a difference.

For the first large street exhibition in a nascent Arab democracy, the posting promised to be surprising and the confrontation with art not always simple. Our first two days were quite hot (insulted in La Goulette the first day, posters taken down in Tunis the second day). So we decided to go to Sidi Bouzid (where it all started), an isolated region, to work with those who did the revolution before coming back to the popular districts of the capital.

There is nothing better to understand the weight of traditions and the willingness to change than to post big portraits in the symbolic places of the popular districts and try to explain the concept to people nearby…

And then, we received a warm welcome in Sfax, Sidi Bouzid, Le Kram where men and women (OK, mostly men) have asked questions, challenged the project, raised objections, posted with us, explained the project to their neighbors…

We come back with hope that Tunisia will become a country open to art as Spain after Franco or Berlin after the wall was taken down.

PROJECT WRINKLES OF THE CITY - LOS ANGELES

The Wrinkles of the City is a world-scale project aimed to be presented in various cities around the world where human wrinkles as well as architectural, can be found. Before Los Angeles, JR has pasted The Wrinkles of the City in Cartagena, Spain (2008) and in Shanghai, China (2010). In Spanish, the project is entitled Los Surcos de la Ciudad.

Los Angeles is quite a new city, the second largest in the United States. Following Cartagena &Shanghai, JR wants to bring his Wrinkles of the City project to Los Angeles in 2011. This time, the purpose of the project isn't to meet witnesses of the changes that have occurred in the city or in their own lifes. Los Angeles is the place where the Hollywood myth was born, with its stars system, the glamour and the beauty being part of the identity of the city.

For this project, JR wishes to oppose the wrinkles of old people living in LA and the marks of their past with the image of perfection or regenerated beauty in the XXIst century. For instance, in Southern California, plastic surgery is no longer a luxury but a lifestyle. It is now socially accepted, above all cultural and social barriers. With this approach, the most interesting part of the project is to spread these old wrinkled portraits in the city, using the gigantic urban development as a huge canvas. Contrary to Cartagena or Shanghai, JR wont paste on ruins or destoyed walls and buildings.

The city is considered by planners and geographers as a forerunner and model for the development of American metropoles. The "City of Angels" appears as a laboratory of "urban postmodernism", that offers large new and recent walls to paste downtown and all around the suburbs. Considering JRs way of working, Los Angeles could become a real open air museum.

Imaginary Worlds: SANER, DHEAR + NEUZZ

During 2010, you were able to enjoy a large variety of forms and styles in our programmed expositions in the MONTANA GALLERY BARCELONA space.

One of the collections which stood out, without a doubt, is that of SANER, DHEAR, and NEUZZ. These three guys from MEXICO D.F. came across the ocean to show us their graphic interpretation of the images which circulate in their minds, products of their dreams, and fiction mixed with the traditional Mexican culture.

For a few weeks, they managed to bring us into their imaginary world, and we didn't want to miss the opportunity to have a chat with them so that they could tell us more about their motivations.

This short documentary wouldn't have been possible without the work done by Edu Bajotierra Producciones, and without the space generously offered to us by the Asociación de La Fundición del Poble Nou.

The work was done with various colors and ranges of MTN 94.

New York, NY - On Thursday and Friday, January 27 and 28, the Grammy nominated Metropolis Ensemble presents Hallucinations: A mind-bending concert featuring the world premiere electronic-acoustic remix by Ricardo Romaneiro of John Corigliano's "Three Hallucinations", based on his Academy Award-nominated film score to "Altered States," paired with music by Enrico Chapela and newly commissioned electronic-acoustic works by Du Yun, Gity Razaz, and Ricardo Romaniero.

Hallucinations is an adaptation of selections from composer John Corigliano's Academy Award-nominated iconic film score "Altered States", as re-imagined by Ricardo Romaneiro for chamber orchestra and live electronics. Surrealistic instrumental and electronic effects are combined with frenetic orchestral textures and sparse, eerie melodies to create a surround-sound cinematic experience.

Using programs like Ableton Live/Max and Sibelius, composer Ricardo Romaneiro has created electronic-acoustic remixes, performed live with analog synth modules and drum machines as well as controlling computers using a Lemur touch controller. In addition, orchestral instruments such as harp, bass, keyboard, bassoon and strings are processed through the electronics. For Hallucinations, Romaneiro re-arranged pieces originally written for a large orchestra to be performed by a smaller chamber orchestra, remixing and adding electronic elements in the process. The result is not simply electronics added to an orchestral instruments, but an true integration of the two. “The orchestra is electrified; vibrations from the strings run in harmony with electronic currents,” Romaneiro says. “The key is to blend the sounds as one.”

Including Hallucinations, the concert features 4 *World Premiere* Metropolis Ensemble commissions.

Romaniero's Strata, for chamber orchestra and electronics, weaves the listener through layers of pulsating grooves and radiant harmonies, creating a kaleidoscopic tapestry of sound and rhythm.
The Metamorphosis of Narcissus by Gity Razaz is structured as a triplex musical soundscape with each section exploring an internal/psychological stage of Narcissus’ metamorphosis. Themes from the first section return as fragments in expanded form, giving an overall sense of perpetual development.
Rising star composer Du Yun contributes Fallen Warriors, the Cihuacoatl's Eye for winds, string quartet, and electronics. Du Yun uses her unique voice to shed light on the Aztec mythology of Cihuacoatl, the goddess of fertility and childbirth. In many traditions, childbirth has long been compared to warfare and the women who die in childbirth are honored as fallen warriors. At once chaotic and monstrous, this piece ultimately traces a sense of resilient lament.

Receiving its New York Premiere will be Enrico Chapela's work LiPo, based on the poem “Li Po” by the Mexican poet José Juan Tablada, who took inspiration from the life of the Chinese poet Li Po. Tablada traveled to the Far East during the first years of the last century where he discovered the poetry of Li Po. This poem is based on Li Po’s biography and on a free Spanish translation of his most famous work, “Drinking alone with the moon”.

Metropolis Ensemble is a nonprofit professional chamber orchestra and collective of the finest emerging performing artists and composers today. Led by Grammy-nominated conductor Andrew Cyr, Metropolis Ensemble is dedicated to launching the next generation of outstanding composers and performers and has quickly established a reputation for presenting “new music played with the same kind of panache and bravura we usually experience only in performances of standard repertoire” (Esa-Pekka Salonen).

Founded in 2006, Metropolis Ensemble has commissioned 55 new works of music from a dynamic mix of young composers and is becoming a leading producer of unique, innovative, and interactive concert experiences. The Ensemble attracts diverse audiences by engaging arts enthusiasts to be active participants in the creation, performance, and perpetuation of the music and organization. With museums stories, censorship issues, David Wojnarowicz and Blu in the news, I thought I'd pass this ancient history of a John Fekner project along to you for some perspective...

Fashion Moda was invited to participate at the New Museum's Events Program in December 1980 when they were located at the New School on 14th Street in New York. In the words of Lynn Gumpert, one of the curators, "many of the artists invited... made every effort to desanctify the pristine white gallery space."

After doing the large Charlotte Street Stencils up in the Bronx that summer, this event was the first time I was working with spray paint and stencils in an 'official museum' indoors. Lee and Futura collaborated on an indoor mural and this was Haring's first indoor museum invite as well. Needless to say, there was a lot of spray, marker titles and crude and spontaneous things going on! There is work from this show on the New Museum site.

Well by attempting to read my installation message (done in Latin), you can see that it wasn't the easiest of installations but somehow we all managed to reach an agreement with the director and curators.

DUMTAXAT ARTIBUS ISTIS QUAE FACTAE SUNT UT PENDANTUR DE MURIS ALBIS STUDETISNE which translates to (in small letters written on the wall in English): ARE YOU ONLY INTERESTED IN ART THAT IS MADE TO BE HUNG ON WHITE WALLS.

Sadly, John Lennon was killed while the entire installation was in progress and I wanted to do a tribute. The New Museum said 'fine' and I could use the indoor window facing the street. I sprayed John Lennon, Fashion Moda/New Museum and pasted up a photo of John.

Not content with the small window installation, late that night, keeping with the ephemeral aspect of the show, my crew and I sprayed the large letters IMAGINE using spray snow on the outside glass of the building. The guards came out from the New School, the cops showed up, etc. All I explained was, "The curators said we can use the windows. It's spray snow, it will eventually disappear." I don't believe the New Museum staff were too thrilled at first, but the work remained up through the New Year, providing some solace during that rather sad holiday season with John Lennon gone."

Veng RWK's Identifiable Reality at Pandemic Gallery

In his first solo show, Veng takes us back to simpler times, to an era when things were made to last. Inspired by the artistry and work ethic of his grandfather, who hailed from a family of Swedish carpenters, Veng’s detail-rich paintings focus on the craftsmanship of the handmade. Embracing the handmade aesthetic to the fullest for this exhibition, Veng had custom mahogany panels built and crafted his own paints from simple pigments and linseed oil. Blurring the lines between the substantive and the imaginary, his paintings depict a world populated by a cast of stoic characters and whimsical winged creatures that interact with wooden contraptions more phantasmagorical than real. Drawing equally on the Old Masters and modern-day illustrators, Veng’s work possesses a timelessness not often captured by his contemporaries.

Born on Staten Island in 1981, Veng began studying painting as a young kid at a local art league. Since then, painting has remained an integral part of his life. With his work, he looks to capture the feel of something made long ago, be it characters with old-fashioned appearances or objects with Old World designs. He depicts ideas in his paintings in a representational and faithful manner, yet conveys them visually with a whimsical touch.

Borrowing from techniques of the Northern Renaissance, Veng paints by building up multiple layers. His thought process for painting, however, is less traditional and very much informed by his background in street art. He aims to make surreal impressions, with characters whose square heads are on the one hand very unreal, yet whose facial features are eerily familiar. He enjoys depicting scenes showing the viewer fictitious landscapes of an Old World interspersed with contemporary qualities. Nature also plays an important role in Veng’s work. He shows animals in a more traditional manner, painting them with realistic colors and textures. Often he’ll couple animals with imaginary devices that they control. Whether on a panel in the studio or on a wall in a city, through his work Veng tries to convey a playful world of mixed inspirations.

Deep in the belly of New York City lies a ghost town of a subway station, where the trains don't run, but street art thrives. For the past 18 months, 103 artists have been covertly sneaking into the space to create and display their work on the dank walls of the pit.

Combining street art with spelunking, The Underbelly Project is a real collection of works that exists four stories beneath the surface of the City. But good luck finding it.

Street artists Workhorse and PAC curated the underground exhibit in an abandoned subway station, but the exact location won't be released to the public, for fear of legal repercussions. (If caught trespassing on or defacing MTA property, they could be arrested and fined.)

Each of the 103 artists had one night to finish his or her piece. One by one, Workhorse or PAC led them to the space -- which entailed a difficult and dangerous process of waiting for the active station's platform to clear and then maneuvering through an old entrance to the abandoned tracks of yore -- where they let their creative juices flow.

It wasn't always easy. Some nights, MTA officials would shut down the nearby subway line to work on the track, forcing the artists to remain silent and turn out their lights for long stretches of time. "We were going crazy," artist Patrick McNeil told The New York Times, "We were like, 'We've got to get the hell out of this dusty blackness.' You couldn't see your hand in front of your face."

The project took a year and a half to put together and includes work from well-known graffiti artists like Ron English, Swoon and Revok. Most of the works are murals painted directly onto the walls, but one installation by Jeff Stark features a dining table set in the middle of the track bed, complete with candles, wine and flowers. Sounds romantic ... until you factor in all the rats.

Since no one knows where this gallery is and collectors can't buy the art, what's the point of even having an exhibit? Street artist Workhorse tells the Times that they want it "to become part of the folklore of the urban art scene."

To make sure it remains folkloric, the curators destroyed all the equipment they used to reach the space, making it even more difficult for the average urban explorer to find. WarnsWorkhorse, "If you go in there and break your neck, nobody's going to hear you scream."

So, if you prefer your art with the added dangers of possible quadriplegia, we recommend you try to find it.

'I was invited to participate with L'association LE MUR (lemur.asso.fr/) here in Paris. The association invites artists from around the world come and paint this billboard. Each artist is given 2 days to paint on the paper which will then be pasted up on the 24 foot x 9 foot billboard.

Being that I'm in France I felt it would only be normal to paint a french word play that that local parisiennes could appreciate. This french word play "Prendre le taureau par les cornes" (Take the bull by the horns) was a motivational message and extremely fun working with the positioning of the typography.'

Banksy painting stolen in Paris, France

Looks like some new stuff from BANKSY hit Paris. No, it didn't. This is brand new stuff from ABOVE in Paris. Pictures and video after the text!

Here's what ABOVE had to say:

"Last year I was traveling for 3-months around Europe and spent 2 weeks in Paris. One day when I was walking around Paris I found this spot but unfortunately I had just 1 day before my flight to Rome. After observing the large concrete frame on the wall, it gave me a lot of inspiration for several ideas on how to creatively interact with the un-used frame and location. One idea was to juxtapose an “art thief” stealing a popular painting like the Mona Lisa from the frame. I felt the idea and site-specific stencil would interact well with the un-used frame and the fact that the Mona Lisa is located just 10 minutes away inside the Louvre museum.

Time always changes things and with that new situations arise. Since last year when I was in Paris I’ve noticed a lot of new topics in street art and more importantly the thievery of art works in the street. I felt it more interesting and relative to have the art thief portrayed in the stencil stealing a piece of art that actually gets stolen quite often. The English artist Banksy is one of the most popular street artists and highly publicized victims of his street artworks being stolen. It’s not by random chance this happens to Banksy’s art as first and foremost he makes great work but also due to the fact that his indoor works have sold for several hundred thousand dollars you can imagine when he paints outside in the street his works are soon sought after by thieves.

It’s an interesting concept and somewhat of an irony as we the artists and the thieves are both working in an illegal manner. One illegal activity inspires another. The artist paints illegally with spray cans on a wall, while the thieves jack hammer and chip off illegally painted walls, illegally. It’s kind of like the pot calling the kettle black to a degree.
I took the initiative to comment and create a situation in this piece that could mimic both illegal acts simultaneously executed here in the painting and in the process.

Many years ago before Banksy’s mass appeal he painted his popular rat image that read, “Because I’m worthless.” Times have changed Banksy is a common household name as well as the increased value of his artworks. I felt like it would be applicable to the current state of affairs to appropriate his previous statement to “Because now I’m worth it” to reflect the past and current thievery of his street artworks."

ESPO Hits Syracuse, NY With His Love Letter Project.

Building on his Love Letter project in Philadelphia, Steve Powers and his crew moved on to Syracuse to transform what has been a colossal barrier between two disparate neighborhoods into a point of interest, a gathering spot, and a conversation.

"Powers’ hand-painted signs draw on years of his own work as a painter and graffiti artist, but also on a long tradition of making, advertising, and handcrafting. Coming to Syracuse, a city that exemplifies the model mid-size, post-industrial rustbelt city under reinvention, is part of a national movement of change, a Rustbelt Renaissance, driven by a creative economy.

“The goal of the project is to ultimately bridge the Near Westside community to downtown, which will give access to new markets and resources for residents in the neighborhood,” says Maarten Jacobs, director of the Near Westside Initiative."

Os Gemeos X Futura at PS 11 In NYC

Seems like Os Gemeos from Brazil are in town. They've been traveling all around the states hitting major cities with their collection of "kids" murals. They came to NYC to collaborate with NYC graffiti legend Futura on a piece. The "kid" features flags from all around the world and can be seem in the schoolyard at PS 11 in Chelsea. Be sure to check it out, as the Gemeos will be around for the length it takes to do the piece- about a week!
